With a tragically short career that lasted barely a decade, the phenomenal Latvian tenor Jānis Zābers was never really afforded the opportunity to make his mark on the international opera scene. As a Latvian national, Zābers was part of a minority in the former Soviet Union, which may have played a part in the neglect from which his career suffered. By the time the Western world discovered this amazing singer, time had already run out for him. One can only speculate on the tremendous career he might have enjoyed if he had been born in a different place and time. Born in Medona County, Latvia on August 11, 1935, Zābers learned to play violin, guitar and piano before becoming interested in singing during his high school years. Georgy Vinogradov, Tenor (1908-1980) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: EUGENE ONEGIN "Kuda, kuda vi udalilis" ("Where have you gone, o golden days of my spring?") Conducted by Nikolai Golovanov / Recorded 1945 My personal opinion: "A neglected tenor who rivals the best that Russia has produced, with a sad wistful quality that is a joy to hear. The voice is almost erotic in its sensuality; heartbreaking in its sadness ..." - UK writer John T. Hughes in 'Opera On Records'. "Has the Lensky aria ever been done more poetically, more stylishly and with such beauty of tone? The voice of the Russian tenor Georgy Vinogradov arches and falls, sighs, murmurs and calls out, bringing the young poet Lensky to life as no one else has", wrote annotator Larry Friedman in the booklet of the CD album 'The Russian Legacy'. This release was a special gift: It was the first chance in the West to hear this almost forgotten tenor in selected scenes. My personal first encounter with his voice took place five years ago: He sang one of my very favorite arias: "Elle ne croyait pas" from Ambrois Thomas' MIGNON (an opera based only on a short part of the Goethe novel). The track was an item of the CD anthology 'Voices Behind The Iron Curtain'. Finally a few months ago I discovered Vinogradov's 1951 Russian sung recording of DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN. I was bewitched by the quality of his singing, the perfect suppleness and naturalness of his expression - and immediately I decided to collect all of his recordings as far as available. Very cautiously I dare to suggest, I've never heard a more beautiful sung MÜLLERIN since the days of Fritz Wunderlich - notwithstanding the fact that Vinogradov recorded his version nearly a decade before the great German tenor. Let's go back to the introductory quotation of John T. Hughes, who compared Georgy Vinogradov with the best Russian tenors. After all, these were Leonid Sobinov (1872-1934), Dimitri Smirnov (1882-1944), Ivan Kozlovsky (1900-1993) and Sergei Lemeshev (1902-1977). Compare them to each other, and you will surely notice common features: Bright and clear silvery voices, paired with a strange melancholic longing. It almost seems, only a land like Russia - historically marked by opressions, resistances and revolts - could produce such touching tenor voices: Proudly radiant and humble and introverted at the same time. It is a mentality that is also mirrored in the music of the great Russian operas and traditional folk songs. Between 1943 and 1951, Vinogradov projected with his warm-hearted singing the Russian soul as a soloist in the famous Soviet Army Chorus, the Alexandrov Ensemble. As a very busy national radio singer he rose to fame in Moscow. Although he never stood on an opera stage, he performed in radio concerts of DON GIOVANNI, Massenet's MANON, many Russian operas and the said MIGNON as Wilhelm Meister - his most brilliant role. Georgy Vinogradov's performances of Wilhelm's two great arias ("Elle ne croyait pas" and "Adieu, Mignon") are among the most beautiful documents of immaculate tenor singing on records at all. A special affinity he had for the romantic song cycles from the first half of the 19th century - besides Schubert's MÜLLERIN, Vinogradov also recorded an enchanting rendition of Robert Schumann's DICHTERLIEBE. Vinogradov was an elegiac singer, not a boastful hero like Bogdan Sobinin in Glinka's A LIFE FOR THE TSAR or Grigoriy in Mussorgsky's BORIS GODUNOV. Once again John T. Hughes: "Gregory Vinogradov is the best Wilhelm Meister of my knowledge. He does not sound quite as lamenting as Ivan Kozlovsky and not quite as warm as Sergei Lemeshev, but the wistful tone of his voice is moving - and fits exactly to the role." Vinogradov was what the French call a 'ténor leger' and the Italians a 'tenore di grazia', a graceful, flexible and light tenor. But without a stage career, it is not easy (in my view) to put him at the side of Kozlovsky and Lemeshev; however it's impossible to ignore him, if there is any discussion about the most amazing Russian tenor voices of all time. You have never heard Russian songs and folklore if you haven't heard Georgy Vinogradov singing Matwei Blanter's 'Katyusha' (Little Catherine) or the romance 'Ochi chyornye' (Black eyes). And even a charming rendition of a harmless operetta song from DER BETTELSTUDENT ("Ich knüpfte manche zarte Bande") shows what is achievable with good taste and style: The little gem (albeit sung in Russian) is a lesson for all today's skin-deep operetta tenors. Georgy Vinogradov's voice was limited in range and volume, but one so beautiful that every note and phrase is worthwhile to hear. Still the past is a valuable source to make surprising discoveries ...

FILM DESCRIPTION: One of the most popular movie musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent who regularly misses her morning prayers because she enjoys going to the hills to sing the title song. Deciding that Maria needs to learn something about the real world before she can take her vows, the Mother Superior (Peggy Wood) sends her off to be governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Arriving at the Trapp home, Maria discovers that her new boss is cold and aloof, and his seven children virtual automatons-at least, whenever the Captain is around. Otherwise, the kids are holy terrors, as evidenced by the fact that Maria is the latest in a long line of governesses. But Maria soon ingratiates herself with the children, especially oldest daughter Liesl (Charmian Carr), who is in love with teenaged messenger boy Rolf. As Maria herself begins to fall in love with the Captain, she rushes back to the Abbey so as not to complicate his impending marriage to a glamorous baroness (Eleanor Parker). But the children insist that Maria return, the Baroness steps out of the picture, and Maria and the Captain confirm their love in the song "Something Good." Unhappily, they return home from their honeymoon shortly after the Nazis march into Austria. Already, swastikas have been hung on the Von Trapp ancestral home, and Liesl's boyfriend Rolf has been indoctrinated in the "glories" of the Third Reich. The biggest blow occurs when Von Trapp is called back to active duty in the service of the Fuhrer. The Captain wants nothing to do with Nazism, and he begins making plans to take himself and his family out of Austria. Great song Lyrics In a white room, with black curtains, near the station. Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings. Silver horses, ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment. I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves You said no strings could secure you at the station Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows I walked into such a sad time at the station As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd Consolation for the old wound now forgotten Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves

The show copied the success of the program “First Nighter”, trying to recreate the atmosphere of going to the theater for a play, telling listeners that every seat in the house was full. The show featured romantic dramas. In its earlier run a young Arch Oboler was one of the writers. The 1946-1950 series starred Harry Elders as the regular leading man and Beverly Younger as the leading lady.

Following studies with Latvian tenor Alexander Vilumanis at the Latvian State Conservatory, the young singer made his operatic debut in the secondary role of Narraboth in Strauss' Salome. As a grad student, the young tenor traveled to Italy in 1962 (the first Soviet artist of his generation to do so) to continue his studies at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome. Several months later, Zābers was accepted into the young artist development program at La Scala. Despite the positive attention he garnered for his singing, the young tenor grew homesick and, the following year, returned to Latvia. Now singing primarily at the Soviet Latvian Opera (now the Latvian National Opera), Zābers' limited but diverse repertoire (24 roles in all) included Vladimir in Borodin's Prince Igor, Herman in Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Alfredo in La Traviata, Manrico in Il Trovatore, the title role in Gounod's Faust and the most celebrated role of his career, Antins in Žilinskis' opera The Golden Horse, which he sang over fifty times. A popular singer in his homeland, he received the title of Honored Artist of the Latvian SSR in 1965. During the late 1960s, it appeared that Zābers was about to break through the Iron Curtain and enjoy an international opera career. There were appearances at the 1967 Canadian National Expo in Montreal, as well as appearances in Finland and Germany. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Zābers' performances had become erratic and rumors began to circulate. There were missed cues, garbled words, strained high notes. Some chalked it up to drinking. Others claimed that the tenor simply didn't possess the necessary discipline to prepare a stage role. In reality, Zābers had been suffering from blinding headaches, dizzy spells and a persistent tremor in his right hand. Fully aware that he was suffering from a brain tumor, he continued to perform, despite his physical issues. Zābers made his final appearance as Prince Andrey Khovansky in Mussorgsky's Khovanschina on December 20, 1970. A few weeks later, surgery was performed. The tumor was aggressive and required two additional operations over the course of the next year, to no avail. Jānis Zābers was only 37 years old when he passed away on March 25, 1973. The magnificent voice (not to mention the Italian training) of Jānis Zābers is evident in this early 1960s recording of "E lucevan le stelle" from Puccini's opera Tosca.

The crowd outside 254 West 54th Street in New York City on this day in 1927 would have been waiting for the curtain of a Puccini opera. On this day in 1957 or '67, they would have been waiting for a filming of an episode of Password or maybe Captain Kangaroo. On this day in 1977, however, the crowd gathered outside that Midtown address was waiting and hoping for a chance to enter what would soon become the global epicenter of the disco craze and the most famous nightclub in the world: Studio 54, which opened its doors for the very first time on April 25, 1977. The impresarios behind Studio 54 were Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, college roommates at Syracuse University who got into the nightclub business after their first venture, a chain of steak restaurants, failed to flourish. But before taking Manhattan by storm and becoming famous for openly and shamelessly excluding all but the most chic, famous or beautiful patrons from their establishment, Rubell and Schrager were running a far less pretentious operation called the Enchanted Garden in the far reaches of Queens. The woman who deserves the lion's share of the credit for making 54 into the celebrity playground that it became was Carmen D'Alessio, a public-relations entrepreneur in the fashion industry, whose Rolodex included names like Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol and Truman Capote. Her buzz-building turned the grand opening into a major item in the New York gossip columns, and her later efforts—like having Bianca Jagger ride a white horse into the club for her 30th birthday party—stoked the public's fascination with Studio 54 even further. Not just the usual celebrity suspects—actors, models, musicians and athletes—but also political figures like Margaret Trudeau, Jackie Onassis and, infamously, White House Chief of Staff Hamilton Jordan came out to be seen during the club's brief heyday. From a musical standpoint, Studio 54 did not seek to break new ground, but rather to feed its patrons a familiar diet of dance hits. Artists like Grace Jones, Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor all made live appearances there, but Studio 54 belonged to the DJs and to the free entertainment provided by the club's flamboyant staff and clientele. While disco reigned supreme on the pop charts, Studio 54 reigned supreme among

Fifteen of the nation's most respected education and political researchers, writers, and speakers, including public school teachers - some in the trenches since 1965 - were videotaped. A special roundtable discussion involving researcher/activists Karen Bracken and Kelleigh Nelson, Tennessee, and Diane Kepus, Karen Schoen, and Debbie Gunnoe, FLorida, provides up-to-date information related to Common Core, tax-funded school choice and charter schools with their unelected boards. Written submissions are included from the speakers, as well as from those who could not attend the conference. One is offered a banquet of written works, including rich history, from great patriots and recognized writers active from 1960-2000; i.e., Jacqueline and Malcolm Lawrence, Joan Masters, Elizabeth Trotto, Peggy Cuddy, and from equally talented individuals no longer with us: the late Maureen Heaton, Don Bell, Jo Hindman, Bettye Lewis, and Ruth Feld. . This impeccable research is your tool kit: ammunition to fight and win the government/corporate/tax-exempt foundation-funded war against our children and grandchildren, and against our free constitutional republic, very aptly illustrated by Joel Pett, Pultizer Prize-winning cartoonist in his 1983 Phi Delta Kappan cartoon. However, just before they can begin, Wales and Sophie jump in and attacks Earth Eagle. Just as it seems Eagle will loose, the dark power takes control of Tsubasa and sends Wales and Sophie's beys flying. Klaus questions what this dark power is, and Julius answers, claiming it must be some sort of evil presence. On a hill nearby, Ryuga watches the dark power, although merely comments: "Is that it?" As the dark power runs wild, Tsubasa tries to take control again, explaining he only wanted to test his strength against the best in the world, who he believed to be Julian. The dark power confronts him, explaining it and Tsubasa are the same and that Tsubasa subconsciously created it. Tsubasa denies this, but the dark power taunts him and explains everyone has darkness in their hearts, including Tsubasa. Even so, Tsubasa regains control as Eagle runs wild, smashing into everything. Just before Wales and Sophie can take advantage and finish him off, Ryuga interrupts with his new bey: Meteo L-Drago LW105LF. Whilst L-Drago proceeds to damage both Cetus beys, Ryuga tells Tsubasa the dark power he possesses is a small fragment of it, the last fragment in existence. He goes on to explain that the original L-Drago had gained power and lost it's natural strength from the evil people who had used it. Meteo L-Drago is the result of much hard training, the original power of L-Drago without human interference. As Tsubasa ponders over this Ryuga tells him not to resist the dark power, instead to become one with it. Tsubasa is silenced as he wonders about this, meanwhile Ryuga proceeds to used L-Drago to hurt Wales and then go after Sophie. Before he can make contact, Julian gets in the way, complaining there has been enough destruction tonight. Ryuga notices Destroyer is a reverse-rotating bey, but comments the only true reverse-rotating bey is L-Drago. Julian disagrees, and Ryuga smiles as he tells Julian they will decide that later.
